You can stop a virtual machine from running immediately by typing (e.g. for a VM called 'matt1'):
$ bigv vm stop matt1

Currently, the dump of various statistics shows that the stop was successful.
The machine will be stopped as if you pulled its power cord, so this should only be done as a last resort. Unless the machine has malfunctioned we'd advise using vm shutdown instead.
The machine will not start back up again until you type vm start.
