A BigV account consists of a set of groups, each of which can contain several virtual machines. A group of virtual machines may later be associated with a private network, and you can also delegate administration of any machines within a group to another user.
Currently these two useful features of groups are not yet implemented, but if you are setting up virtual machines where you will want to use a private network, or delegate its administration to another person, we'd suggest using them.
Every account contains a group called default, which is used if you don't specify one. When you create a new virtual machine, it will have a name created that looks like this, e.g.:
machine1.default.showbother.uk0.bigv.io
Whereas if you had created the VM in the shop group it would be:
machine1.shop.showbother.uk0.bigv.io
